“Alex had an incredible year,” said Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. “He now he has three of the four fastest times ever on the Wickham Park course that is used for the Class and Open championships, as well as for New Englands.”
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse.
Ostberg is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced later in January.
Ostberg, a senior who has committed to Stanford University, won the New England championship. He also won the Class L and State Open, and finished ninth at the Foot Locker national championships. He also finished first the Manhattan Invitational.
He has maintained a 4.10 GPA in the classroom. And Ostberg has volunteered locally as an emergency medical technician with Darien Emergency Medical Services Post 53.
Former Fairfield Prep star Connor Rog was also a two-time winner of the Gatorade award. Staples' Hannah DeBalsi has won the award for two straight years.
